Photos of 2025

Photography year in review.

The turning of the year marks the most natural occasion for reflection and resetting. Stepping into 2026 with a camera in hand comes with a short stop to look back at some photos captured in 2025 - let’s go!

Final Glimmer

With the first half of the year consumed by relocating life (literally), photography with any focus really actually started in May. It wasn’t until June though that I took a shot I actually liked - the above was not what I had in mind but why have boundaries?

Nectar Hunting

Later in June I was drawn to the Nova Scotian lupins. Despite the expensive kit collection, it was a rather inexpensive Fujifilm X-Pro1 with a budget TTArtisan manual focus lens that caught this bee between nectar trips.

Big Rock

The next day I took this photograph - ‘big rock’ - during early evening light. The combination of light, water and seaweed gave me the cover image for my Substack page; Observations and Musings.

Stationary

Jumping into July I started pushing myself with some novel and unfamiliar genres alongside some smaller stimulating projects. That didn’t stop me from photographing my ‘go-to’….and I love this lifeguard station.

Only Light Moves in this Station Lounge

August was very profitable for me. Tonality, subjects and conditions just became so good, so often. I think being on vacation by the coast, feeling relaxed and enjoying time with family and friends added to the productivity - I felt calm and creative.

Upside Down House

Heading into September it was the west, not the east, coast of Canada that took centre attention. After my first trip to Vancouver Island I can only say that I am in love - send me back with all my gear…

Immovable

Through the Crowd

Between the water and greenery, opportunities for interesting subjects spilled over into October.

Downward Trajectory

October and November come at you in oranges and browns. It was local trips around Ontario that opened up the fall pallet and wow is it beautiful.

Bathing Roots

Not all my photos are big vistas of obvious landscapes. I’m somewhat of a ‘noticer’ - as long as we have light we have the chance to be creative.

Tickle and Fall

You may notice (are you noticer?) that most of my photos are shot in portrait orientation. This is not because I am lazy, I have probably faffed about with composition - including a landscape option - for most photos before taking a shot. It has to work and minimise distractions for the observer, otherwise the variables need attention.

Fall Whirlpool

December? Well, given most of it was spent preparing for and then in England the photographs take on a slightly different aesthetic (increase in grey shade).

Parting the Way

One of the final photos I did take in 2025 actually bookends quite nicely. It’s not what I would typically be drawn to in subject matter but you can only work with what you have.

Light Dissection

And that just abut wraps up 2025 in photos. If you’re interesting in more of my photography you can find me on social media.

Heading into 2026 my photography aims are pretty simple really:

  • Get out, get shooting.

  • Print and journal.

  • Don’t stress.

What are your photography goals for 2026?
